How old is too old to play video games? Is their even a limit? If like me you were born in the 80s, you probably grew up with video games and can’t remember a time when people used to play stickball in the streets or basketball in a back alley. To me it seems like the last time kids played outside instead of in their separate homes over the internet horse and buggy was the preferred mode of transportation.
I asked a friend of mine about this recently and she said that it was fine that I still get excited about a video game release date. This week it was GTA IV, and I wasn’t the only one who had been anticipating this game for months. She said we grew up playing video games and they’re not just for kids anymore. I still feel about strange about wasting 100s of hours living the life a fictional character but it sure is more exciting than real life.
I sometimes wonder if we’d have more creative people in the world if video games and television were never invented. It seems like people used to read and write in the old days a lot more, probably because they had nothing else to do. Nowadays nobody wants to read a book or even the newspaper. They want to hear a book on tape while they’re driving to their next appointment and they want to skim the headlines on their phone. I’d say television is the biggest culprit for the dumbing down of our society but I’m sure video games don’t help all that much.
But, lucky for me, video games are an accepted form of entertainment. And big business to boot. So what if I don’t socialize with real, living, breathing people. I have enough trouble keeping straight the social life of my character in GTA IV. Who knew having a girlfriend was so much work?
