Mets Get Rickrolled

April 9, 2008 · No Comments

Leave it to the New York Mets to be the first major sports franchise to be “rickrolled”. If you’ve never heard of rickrolling it’s really quite simple. You send a link to a friend or associate, usually in an email, and when they click on the link they see a video of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”. As far as internet phenomena go I happen to enjoy this one because the video for this classic 80s shmaltzfest is actually quite funny to watch. I guess nobody at the Mets has been on the internet in the past 6 months.

Personally I’m happy the Mets got rickrolled. They put out an online poll for fans to choose the 8th inning song for the season and the choices on the list weren’t really that inspiring anyway. “Build Me Up Buttercup”? “I’m a Believer”? These songs don’t exactly get me excited to watch baseball. The rickrolling of the Mets almost eclipses the continued voting for Sanjaya in last season’s American Idol.

Now that the Mets know they’ve been duped they decided to forego Rick Astley and do the cop-out move, playing all six songs and basing the decision on fan reaction. I’m hoping fans stay silent during the songs as a form of protest. It’s the only American thing to do.
